A typical Goan is characterized by his unhurried attitude, especially when it comes to cooking. A Goan loves his ‘nistyache‘ (seafood), enjoyed on a daily basis, and afterward, the afternoon is spent in siesta. If you’re visiting Dadar don’t miss out on the tradition; it’s easy to find Goan and Malwani seafood restaurants and shacks. We list some of the best here.

1. Gomantak

Restaurant, Indian, Vegetarian

Gomantak is a legendary restaurant here, evident in the long queues outside on a Sunday afternoon that snake behind the Plaza bus stop. The people are patient even when the wait is 30-45 minutes, waiting just to sample their Malwani fare, known for taste and quality without burning a hole in the pocket. The casual dining experience also includes the AC and non-AC sections; consider yourself lucky if you’re able to grab a place in the AC section at the last moment.

2. Sindhudurg

Sindhudurg

The best way to enjoy Malwani fried fish is to order it hot off the tava and have it immediately. Sindhudurg has prices that are a tad higher, but the food never disappoints. It is tucked in the interior lanes of Dadar closer to the Sena Bhavan area. The Gawthi chicken is a must-try, its flavor brought out by slow cooking it in Malwani masala and coconut-based gravy.

Chaitanya

Chaitanya is the sister restaurant of its namesake in Malwan and started out at its Dadar location opposite the HP Petrol Pump near Aaswad with only two tables. It is still small and still offers value for money when it comes to seafood. It also tops the list for go-to home delivery places when one is looking for Malwani food in Dadar. The best thing to order on the menu is a thali, which comes with a fried fish. They serve a variety of accompaniments such as thali, and puffed ‘vadas,’ bhakris (rotis) of three different types, ghavne (resembles a soft dosa), and amboli (resembles appam), all of which pair really well with coconut-based gravies. Special mention should be given to the ‘Vajri Masala’ on the menu, which is dried blood cooked in spice gravy. Not many restaurants offer this, as it’s a culinary feat to pull off. The boldness of including this item on the menu requires equal daring to eat it, as it is certainly not for the faint-hearted.

3. Sachin

Sachin

Sachin has been serving generations of patrons, with the older population having dined there at least once in their lifetime. The best part of their menu is the thali that easily becomes a meal for two when ordered with extra sides of chapati or rice. The seafood platter is the best choice for larger groups and a way to sample all the seafood varieties on the menu such as pomfret, prawns, mandeli, surmai and bombil (Bombay duck).
