Hong Kong is best known for its urban lifestyle, and yet, as a city sitting on the coast of Southern China, it has many beautiful seaside getaways tucked away from the usual traveler. There are many beaches and islands with a good reputation near Hong Kong Island, especially by its southern and western sides. However, we’ve focused on the lesser-known beaches in Sai Kung, located in the New Territories. Luckily, the seaside getaways featured here are easily accessible by public transportation and/or boat.

Clear Water Bay Beach #1

Take the bus – number 91, coming from Diamond Hill – to the second-to-last stop called Clear Water Bay Beach #1. You’ll spot a sign marking the way to the beach. To get there, you’ll have to walk down a flight of stairs going down the hill to reach the beach – it takes about five minutes. This beach is small and quiet (at least on weekdays), and it features a large, shaded barbecue area. It is a top choice for reading alone, sleeping, meditating or spending some relaxing quality time with friends and family. For golf lovers, visitors might get excited about being able to see a portion of the Kau Sai Chau, a public golf course, from the beach.

Clear Water Bay Beach #2

Silverstrand Beach

Silverstrand Beach is a small beach located at the end of a path that branches off from Silver Cape Road, and it can also be reached by taking the 91 bus and getting off at the Silver Strand Mart. It is a quiet beach located near high-end residential houses and apartments. This beach is very well hidden away from the public because of its covert location, and given that it is so close to some private residences nearby, Silverstrand Beach exerts the feel of a private, family-friendly beach. There is also a tuck shop at the beach to buy snacks and drinks in case you get thirsty or peckish.

Kiu Tsui and Kiu Tau, Sharp Island (Kiu Tsui Chau)

To get here, you’ll need to take a bus to Sai Kung town center (from places like Diamond Hill, Choi Hung, and Po Lam MTR stations) and walk to the Sai Kung pier to catch a boat to Kiu Tsui (which is on the north side of Sharp Island). Here, there are two beaches: a regular, small sandy beach for swimming near the pier and a pebble beach on the other side for aquatic activities like kayaking and sailing. When the tide is low, people will find that Kiu Tsui and Kiu Tau (an islet) are connected; therefore, they could reach Kiu Tau on foot via the tombolo.

Hap Mun Beach, Sharp Island (Kiu Tsui Chau)

To get here, either take a boat from Sai Kung town or take a 40-minute hike from Kiu Tsui. Hap Mun Beach is a clean beach with fine sand and is popular for swimming, sunbathing, and various aquatic activities. This is one of the best beaches in Hong Kong because it usually ranks Grade 1 (the top grade in terms of beach quality) by Hong Kong’s Environmental Protection Department. There is a tuck shop with a good supply of beach products, such as rafts to be rented and a good variety of snacks and drinks sold.
